Ruta de los Pueblos Blancos Sierra de Grazalema Circuit
Roman roads linking Andalusian white villages
The ancient Roman roads connecting Andalusia’s white villages weren’t built for modern vehicles, but they’ll test every inch of ground clearance you’ve got. This circuit links Grazalema, Zahara de la Sierra, and Setenil de las Bodegas through the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, following stone-paved paths that Roman legions once marched. The Guadalete River crossing near Arcos requires careful timing—spring snowmelt turns this ankle-deep ford into a genuine hazard that’s claimed more than one overconfident driver.
Moderate difficulty with a few expert-level river crossings and loose limestone descents. High-clearance 4WD essential, recovery gear recommended for the river sections. Best tackled May through September when water levels drop and weather cooperates. No permits required but respect private olive groves. You’ll earn spectacular views of Cádiz province’s white villages perched on impossible cliff faces, plus some of Spain’s best jamón ibérico at trail’s end.
