Howe Sound Crest — Squamish River FSR to Elaho Divide
Past the climbing crags, into raw Sea-to-Sky wilderness.
Most people drive through Squamish and never look past the climbing crags. The ones who do — and who turn north up the Squamish River FSR past Brackendale — find a completely different world. The road follows the river past active log sorts and deteriorating bridges before the grades steepen toward the Elaho confluence. From there, rougher spur roads climb toward the Howe Sound Crest divide where clearcuts give way to old-growth hemlock and the views back toward Howe Sound and Garibaldi massif are genuinely staggering. Key obstacles include a badly eroded creek crossing at approximately km 34 and a series of off-camber shelf sections above treeline where soft shoulders drop steeply.
High clearance 4×4 is the minimum — this road chews up body panels on undercut corners and punishes stock suspension on the upper rocky sections. Logging traffic is active on weekdays; give trucks the right of way and keep your radio on 151.955 MHz. No permits required for recreational access but conditions change fast after rain. Best season is June through October. Fuel in Squamish before you go — the nearest diesel north of town is Pemberton, over an hour away. Camping along the Squamish River gravel bars is superb.
