Cordillera Central Jayuya to Orocovis Mining Road
Forgotten mountain mining road through PR's backbone
This forgotten mining road cuts straight through Puerto Rico’s mountain backbone, connecting Jayuya to Orocovis via a series of switchbacks that climb past Cerro de Punta’s eastern flanks. The route passes through three abandoned limestone quarries from the 1940s, their massive cuts still visible in the mountainside, before dropping into the Río Grande de Manatí headwaters where concrete Ford crossings from the plantation era still hold strong.
Moderate difficulty demands high-clearance 4WD for the loose limestone sections and occasional washouts after heavy rains. Best tackled during dry season (December-April) when the clay doesn’t turn into slick death traps. No permits required, but fuel up in Jayuya — it’s 28 miles of empty mountain country with zero services. The payoff is unfiltered views across the entire island from multiple ridge crossings and legitimate solitude in Puerto Rico’s forgotten interior.
