Garibaldi Lake Road

Brutal climb to BC's most iconic alpine landscape

Difficult

The Garibaldi Lake Road switchbacks relentlessly up the Cheakamus Valley, gaining 1,500 meters in just 18 kilometers of loose rock and exposed roots. This former logging road becomes increasingly technical as it climbs past the Barrier, a 300-meter lava wall that dammed Garibaldi Lake 13,000 years ago. The final push to Panorama Ridge requires walking, but vehicles can reach the subalpine zone where massive Douglas firs give way to stunted mountain hemlock.

High clearance 4WD with good approach angles is mandatory—this isn’t a trail for stock vehicles. The road deteriorates significantly above the 1,200-meter mark, with washouts and rockfall common. Best tackled August through October when snow clears and the road firms up. No facilities exist, so self-sufficiency is critical. The reward is camping beneath some of BC’s most dramatic peaks, with Garibaldi, Atwell, and the Sphinx rising directly overhead in a wall of ice and granite.
