Mark Twain National Forest Forest Road 255 Grassy Creek Loop

Deep woods technical that separates pretenders from contenders

Difficult

Forest Road 255 carves through some of the most remote country in the Mark Twain, where Grassy Creek cuts deep hollows between limestone ridges and massive white oaks that predate the logging boom. The trail drops into creek beds that’ll test your departure angles, then climbs rocky switchbacks where you’re picking lines between boulders the size of washing machines. The old Civilian Conservation Corps bridge crossing at mile 7 is still there — barely — and marks the halfway point where most folks turn around.

This is legitimate technical terrain requiring experienced drivers and modified 4WDs with rock protection. Spring runoff turns creek crossings into proper water obstacles, while summer brings the best conditions for picking through the rock gardens. No permits needed but bring recovery gear and extra water — cell service disappeared about five miles back. It’s a full day commitment that rewards you with some of the best untouched forest left in Missouri.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Jeep Wrangler handle Forest Road 255?

No, you need modifications including rock sliders, skid plates, and aggressive tires. The rocky creek bottoms and technical climbs will damage stock undercarriage protection.

Is the trail open in winter and spring?

Avoid winter and spring when creek crossings become dangerous and mud makes the trail impassable. June through October offers the best conditions with manageable water levels.

Do I need permits to run Grassy Creek Loop?

No permits required, but you must follow Mark Twain National Forest dispersed camping rules and pack out all trash. Stay on designated trails only.

What's the hardest section of the loop?

The rocky creek bed crossings in the lower section require careful line choice and momentum. Expect to spot other drivers through loose boulder fields and slick rock faces.

Can I get cell service for emergencies?

Zero cell service throughout the entire loop. Carry a satellite communicator and inform someone of your planned route and return time before heading out.
