Cordillera Central Cerro La Santa to Adjuntas Mining Road

Central mountain mining road that means business.

Difficult

The red clay turns to soup when it rains on this forgotten mining road that claws its way up Cerro La Santa’s eastern flank. What starts as a decent gravel track from the Adjuntas suburbs quickly deteriorates into a rock-studded nightmare that’ll test your differential locks and your patience. The old coffee plantation ruins at kilometer 8 mark where things get serious—from here to the abandoned chromite mine at the summit, it’s all about line choice through loose shale and exposed bedrock.

This is a proper technical challenge that demands low-range 4WD, skid plates, and aggressive all-terrains at minimum. Rainy season (May-October) turns this into a muddy death trap, so stick to the dry months when you can actually see the trail markers carved into the mahogany trees. The payoff is worth the punishment: 360-degree views from the mine ruins that stretch from the Atlantic to the Caribbean, plus some of the best dispersed camping spots in the Cordillera Central.
