Guilarte State Forest Radio Tower Access Road
Technical summit assault through mountain forest.
This maintenance road climbs 2,400 vertical feet through Puerto Rico’s mountain interior to communication towers perched on Monte Guilarte’s 3,950-foot summit. The route starts deceptively easy through coffee plantations before entering dense sierra palm forest where the track becomes a rocky, root-infested challenge. The infamous ‘Paso de los Diablos’ at kilometer 6 features a near-vertical rock garden that has claimed more than one oil pan — scouts on foot are mandatory here.
This is difficult terrain requiring experienced drivers and capable rigs. You’ll need 4WD low, skid plates, and aggressive tires for the worst sections. Wet season turns the clay sections into greasy nightmares, so stick to December through April. No permits required, but check with forestry officials in Adjuntas about road conditions — recent landslides can close access for weeks. The summit offers rare views of both the Caribbean and Atlantic coasts on clear days.
