Sam Houston National Forest Double Lake Recreation Area Backcountry Loop
Deep piney woods cathedral drive
This network of old logging roads and fire breaks cuts through the heart of East Texas piney woods, where 150-foot loblolly pines tower over creek bottoms thick with palmetto and wild magnolia. The route follows Forest Road 217 and connecting trails through some of the darkest, most remote sections of Sam Houston National Forest. Caney Creek crossing near mile marker 8 is the technical highlight—rocky bottom with potential for high water during spring runoff.
Easy to moderate difficulty depending on recent rains and creek levels. Any high-clearance vehicle handles dry conditions, but 4WD recommended during wet periods when clay sections turn slick. Best tackled fall through early spring when bugs are manageable and humidity drops. Free camping available at designated spots along Double Lake, though the backcountry offers better solitude. You’ll experience the cathedral quiet of old-growth pine stands and get a taste of what East Texas looked like before clear-cutting changed everything.
