East Texas Piney Woods Timber Road Network
Deep woods timber roads through pine country
The Piney Woods of East Texas hide a maze of forgotten logging roads that crisscross Tyler County’s dense pine forests. This network connects remote timber cuts and old sawmill sites, following red clay and gravel roads that can turn into slick nightmares when wet. The route passes through active timber management areas where you’ll share trails with massive logging trucks, so keep your radio on channel 19 and pull over when you hear them coming.
Moderate difficulty with the biggest challenge being the infamous East Texas gumbo – red clay that’ll coat your rig and clog your differentials when it gets wet. Stock 4WD with decent ground clearance handles it fine in dry conditions, but avoid this area during rainy season unless you enjoy getting stuck. Spring and fall offer the best conditions with wildflowers and fall colors. Dispersed camping allowed in designated areas, and you’ll find plenty of fishing holes along the Neches River tributaries.
