Angelina National Forest Backcountry Circuit
Piney Woods circuit through Bonnie and Clyde country
Deep in the Piney Woods, this network of forest service roads and hunting trails cuts through longleaf pine stands and bottomland hardwoods where Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow once laid low between bank jobs. The circuit starts near Zavalla and winds through Angelina National Forest’s most remote sections, crossing Attoyac Bayou multiple times and navigating sandy washes that can swallow a truck in wet weather. The notorious Mud Creek crossing has claimed more than a few bumpers over the years.
Easy to moderate difficulty depending on recent rain—sandy sections become impossible when saturated, while dry conditions make this accessible to stock SUVs with decent tires. Best tackled fall through early spring when water levels drop and the sand firms up. No permits required, but check fire restrictions and hunting seasons before heading out. Dispersed camping is allowed throughout the forest, and you’ll find some of the darkest skies in East Texas along with solid fishing in the deeper creek pools.

Frequently asked questions
Can a stock SUV handle this trail, or do I need a lift?
A stock SUV with decent all-terrain tires is enough — this is an easy trail with no serious obstacles. High clearance helps on the sandy washes and creek fords but isn't required. A lifted rig is overkill here.
Is the trail accessible in summer, and what should I know about the heat?
The trail is technically open year-round, but summer in East Texas is brutal — high humidity, temperatures pushing 100°F, and heavy bug pressure make it genuinely miserable. October through April is the sweet spot for comfortable travel.
Do I need a permit to run this trail or camp in Angelina National Forest?
No permit is required to drive the route or use dispersed campsites in Angelina National Forest. Dispersed camping is free; just follow standard National Forest rules — no fee stations on this circuit.
How serious are the water crossings, and what happens after heavy rain?
The creek fords are shallow and manageable for any capable SUV in normal conditions — nothing technical. After significant rainfall the crossings can rise fast, so check recent weather before you go and don't push a flooded crossing.
There's no cell service on the route — how far is the nearest gas from the trailhead near Zavalla?
Zavalla itself has limited services, so fuel up in Lufkin before heading out — it's roughly 20 miles away and your last reliable stop. With a 45-mile loop and no resupply, topping off in Lufkin means you'll have plenty of margin.
