Pine Creek Sand Hills Technical Challenge

Hidden Sahara in the heart of East Texas piney woods.

Difficult

Hidden deep in the Angelina National Forest, the Pine Creek Sand Hills area contains some of East Texas’ most surprising terrain — towering sand dunes that formed from ancient river deposits, creating a pocket of Sahara-like conditions in the heart of piney woods country. The main route follows Forest Service Road 303 before branching onto unmarked sand tracks that climb steep dune faces and descend into bowl-shaped valleys where pine trees struggle to gain purchase in the shifting sand. The killer obstacle comes at Devil’s Dune, a 40-foot sand wall that requires momentum, proper line choice, and often a tow strap to conquer.

Difficult rating due to deep sand conditions that can trap even experienced drivers — aired-down tires, sand tracks, and a shovel are essential equipment. Best tackled during cooler months from October through March when the sand is more compact and temperatures bearable. No permits required, but inform the Angelina National Forest office of your plans since this area sees little traffic and cell service is nonexistent. Dispersed camping allowed throughout the forest, and you’ll experience terrain unlike anywhere else in Texas while testing your sand driving skills in a surprisingly challenging environment.
