Buffalo Creek Sand Hills Challenge

Deep sand and deeper water in the East Texas pines

Difficult

Buffalo Creek carves through the deepest sand hills in East Texas, creating a 40-mile gauntlet that separates weekend warriors from serious wheelers. The route starts at the Neches River bridge and winds through old-growth pine stands where logging roads from the 1940s have been reclaimed by nature. You’ll hit sugar sand that swallows stock rigs whole, followed by technical creek crossings where Buffalo Creek splits into three channels, each requiring different approach angles and precise throttle control.

Difficult rating for good reason — aired-down tires, recovery gear, and experience in sand are non-negotiable. Summer heat makes this route brutal, so tackle it October through March when temperatures drop below 80. No services for 40 miles once you leave Highway 87, and cell coverage disappears after mile five. The payoff is pristine wilderness camping on creek benches where you might see black bears, wild hogs, and some of the largest longleaf pines left in Texas.
