Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness Access Roads

Gateway to New Mexico's alien badlands

Moderate

The approach roads to Bisti and De-Na-Zin Wilderness wind through some of the most otherworldly terrain in North America – a maze of eroded sandstone formations, balanced rocks, and fossilized logs scattered across 45,000 acres of designated wilderness. These access routes branch off Highway 371 south of Farmington, threading through active oil and gas fields before reaching the wilderness boundaries. The formations here look like something from another planet: mushroom-shaped hoodoos, twisted spires, and precariously balanced caprock formations carved by millions of years of wind and water.

Moderate difficulty due to soft sand, deep ruts, and washouts that can trap vehicles after storms. High-clearance 4WD strongly recommended, especially the eastern approach to De-Na-Zin. Best visited October through April when temperatures are tolerable – summer heat makes hiking dangerous. No permits required for day use, but camping is prohibited within the wilderness boundaries. Bring plenty of water and navigation aids – it’s easy to get disoriented among the formations. The payoff is accessing some of the Southwest’s most spectacular geological oddities with minimal crowds.
