Scattered across the edge of the Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness, these dispersed sites offer front-row seats to one of New Mexico’s most otherworldly landscapes. The camping area sits on BLM land just outside the wilderness boundary, with room for maybe a dozen rigs spread across the flat desert terrain. No amenities whatsoever — pack everything in, pack everything out. The formations themselves are a short hike away, and you’ll have the place mostly to yourself except for the occasional photographer chasing sunrise light.
Access is via a maintained dirt road that any vehicle can handle in dry conditions, but turns into a clay nightmare when wet. Spring and fall are prime time; summer heat can be brutal and winter brings freezing nights. No cell service, no water, no shade — just you and the badlands under a dome of stars.
