Loda Lake Wildflower Sanctuary Loop

Prairie fen wildflower sanctuary with technical sand

Moderate

Deep in the Manistee National Forest, this 8-mile loop winds through one of Michigan’s rarest ecosystems — a prairie fen where lady’s slipper orchids bloom alongside pitcher plants. The sandy two-track starts deceptively easy but quickly deteriorates into rutted, marshy sections that’ll test your line choice. Cross the Loda Creek boardwalk on foot to access the wildflower sanctuary proper, then navigate the technical oak barrens loop where deep sand pockets and fallen timber create natural obstacle courses.

This is moderate difficulty terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD and aggressive tread — the sand-clay mix turns to sticky gumbo when wet. Best tackled May through September when wildflowers peak and trails firm up, though mosquitoes are relentless in early summer. Bring bug spray, recovery gear, and your camera. You’ll earn solitude and some of the Midwest’s most unique flora in a landscape that feels more like northern Canada than lower Michigan.
