Thunder Bay National Forest Nordhouse Dunes Dispersed Area
Scattered camping opportunities throughout the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness, ranging from forested sites behind the dune ridges to more exposed spots closer to Lake Michigan. Most sites require hiking in 0.5 to 2 miles from the parking areas off Nurnberg Road. The terrain shifts from hardwood forest to open sand, with established fire rings at popular spots. Expect wind off the lake and limited natural windbreaks in the dune areas.
Access via Nurnberg Road west of Manistee — the last 2 miles are sandy two-track requiring high clearance. Park at designated areas and hike to dispersed sites. No water sources in the wilderness area, and fires restricted during dry periods. Popular with backpackers and 4WD enthusiasts year-round, though winter camping requires serious cold-weather gear.
