Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Backcountry Beach Route

Michigan's most technical sand driving adventure

Expert

The Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Beach Route cuts through Michigan’s wildest stretch of Lake Michigan coastline, where shifting sand dunes reach 140 feet above the lake and create some of the most challenging driving conditions in the Midwest. Starting from the Nurnberg Road access point, this route follows old logging trails and fisherman’s tracks that wind through coastal forest before dropping onto the beach itself. The notorious Whitefish Point crossing demands perfect timing with lake conditions—high water or strong winds can turn this section into an impassable sand trap.

This is expert-level sand driving that requires serious deflation (down to 12-15 PSI), recovery gear, and experience reading sand conditions. Stock 4WD won’t cut it here—you need aggressive tread, a quality compressor, and MaxTrax or sand ladders. Best tackled May through September when the sand is firmest, though even summer conditions can shift hourly with wind patterns. No permits required for day use, but camping requires advance reservations. The payoff is solitude on one of the Great Lakes’ most pristine beaches, with excellent dispersed camping above the high-water mark.
