Adrar des Iforas Circuit
Saharan peaks and Tuareg trails
The Adrar des Iforas mountains rise from the Sahara like a forgotten world, where Tuareg nomads still follow ancient camel routes through granite peaks reaching 890 meters. This remote circuit threads through valleys carved by prehistoric rivers, past Neolithic rock engravings at Tin-Essako that predate the pyramids. The route follows traditional Tuareg paths between scattered wells, demanding navigation skills when GPS fails among the granite maze and sandstone cliffs that define this harsh landscape.
Security clearances and local guides aren’t just recommended—they’re mandatory for survival in this politically volatile region. High-clearance 4WD with sand ladders, extra fuel for 500+ kilometers, and water for a week minimum. The dry season from November to March provides the only viable window, but even then, temperatures swing from scorching days to near-freezing nights. This isn’t tourism—it’s expedition-level overlanding through one of Africa’s last truly wild frontiers where mechanical failure can turn fatal.
