Huacachina Dune Circuit

Sahara-style sand dunes meet desert oasis

Moderate

The sand tracks around Huacachina oasis carve through some of South America’s tallest coastal dunes, where 200-foot sand mountains shift with every wind storm. This circuit loops east from the lagoon through the Cerro Blanco dune field—officially the world’s highest sand dune at 3,860 feet above sea level. The main route follows established buggy tracks, but side spurs lead to knife-edge ridges where you can see both the Pacific Ocean and the Andes on clear days.

This is pure sand driving—aired-down tires, momentum, and sand ladders essential. Most overlanders tackle this in modified 4x4s during the cooler months (May-August) when temperatures drop below 80°F. The main circuit is moderate difficulty for experienced sand drivers, but venturing off established tracks quickly becomes expert-level. No permits needed, plenty of fuel available in Ica town. What you get is legitimate Sahara-style dune driving 20 minutes from a pisco bar, plus some of the most dramatic desert sunset views on the continent.
