Choquequirao Trek 4WD Access Route
Gateway to Peru's forgotten Inca citadel
The dirt track to Choquequirao drops you into some of the deepest canyon country in the Andes, where the Apurímac River cuts through granite walls older than the Inca empire itself. This route starts from Cachora village and winds 18 kilometers down switchbacks that’ll test your nerves and your clutch, ending at the Playa Rosalina camp where most trekkers begin their hike to the ruins. The final descent past Mirador de Choquequirao offers glimpses of terraces clinging to impossible slopes across the canyon.
This is serious mountain driving—high clearance mandatory, 4WD recommended for wet season. The track gets washed out regularly during the December-March rains, and rockfall is common year-round. Bring extra water, tire repair kit, and don’t attempt this solo. Dry season (May-September) offers the best conditions, but even then expect loose scree, narrow ledges, and zero room for error. What you get is access to Peru’s most spectacular ruins without the crowds—Choquequirao sees maybe 30 visitors a day versus Machu Picchu’s 3,000.
