Ica to Marcona Coastal Desert Traverse

Coastal Peru's toughest sand crossing

Difficult

This remote coastal desert route follows ancient trade paths between Ica and Marcona, cutting through some of Peru’s most challenging sand terrain where pre-Columbian civilizations carved their legacy into the landscape. The trail crosses the Pampa de Villacurí and skirts the edge of the Reserva Nacional de Paracas, passing abandoned mining camps and salt flats that stretch to the horizon. Key waypoints include the Cerro Blanco dune system and the ghost town of San Juan de Marcona’s original mining settlement.

This is legitimate sand driving that’ll test your recovery skills and tire pressure management. You’ll need a capable 4WD with sand tires, recovery gear, and serious water reserves — the coastal fog doesn’t provide relief from dehydration. Best tackled during Peru’s dry season (May to September) when flash floods aren’t a concern. No permits required, but fuel up in Ica and carry spares for everything. The payoff is solitude in one of South America’s most austere landscapes, plus legitimate bragging rights among Peru’s overlanding community.
