Paracas to Pisco Dunes Coastal Circuit

Coastal dunes and cliffs south of Lima

Moderate

This coastal desert circuit starts at Paracas National Reserve and loops inland through massive sand dunes before returning to the Pacific cliffs. The route follows ancient fishermen’s tracks between Paracas Bay and Pisco, crossing the Cerro Blanco dune field – some of the tallest coastal dunes in South America reaching over 2,000 feet. You’ll navigate soft sand, exposed bedrock, and cliff-edge trails with constant ocean views. The contrast between barren desert and rich marine life is stark – sea lions, flamingos, and pelicans thrive where land supports almost nothing.

Easy to moderate difficulty depending on sand conditions and route choices. Stock 4WD with sand recovery gear recommended, though experienced drivers can manage in high-clearance 2WD. Avoid midday heat – early morning and late afternoon provide better sand traction. No water sources on route, so carry plenty. Best year-round due to stable desert climate, though coastal fog can reduce visibility. The circuit offers excellent photography opportunities and access to isolated beaches for camping away from tourist crowds.
