Wenatchee River Road to Icicle Creek Junction

Granite boulder gauntlet to Alpine Lakes access

Difficult

This challenging route follows an old logging road system up the Wenatchee River drainage, requiring navigation through massive granite boulder fields left by ancient glacial activity. The trail becomes increasingly technical as you approach the Alpine Lakes Wilderness boundary, with several mandatory rock crawling sections including the notorious ‘Granite Gate’ obstacle where boulders force drivers into precise line choices. The payoff is access to pristine alpine lakes and some of Washington’s most dramatic granite spire country near Stuart Range.

Difficult rating requires experienced drivers and capable rigs – stock vehicles will struggle with the boulder sections that demand articulation, skid plates, and careful spotting. Best tackled July through September when snow clears from upper elevations, though early season can still have snowpack at higher waypoints. No permits needed for vehicle access, but parking is extremely limited at the wilderness boundary. Bring recovery gear, spare tires, and extra fuel as the nearest services are 25 miles back in Leavenworth. Multiple backcountry camping spots available below the wilderness line.
