Wenatchee National Forest Teanaway Ridge Road
Knife-edge ridge with Stuart Range panoramas
The Teanaway Ridge Road climbs from the Cle Elum River valley onto a knife-edge ridgeline offering 360-degree views of Mount Stuart, the Enchantments, and Alpine Lakes Wilderness. This old mining and fire access road features narrow shelf sections with thousand-foot drop-offs, loose shale surfaces, and steep grades that challenge traction control. The route passes abandoned prospect holes from the 1890s gold rush and connects to the 29 Pines Campground near the Esmeralda Basin trailhead.
Difficult route requiring experienced drivers in capable 4WD vehicles with low range and good ground clearance. The exposed ridge sections can be treacherous in wind or weather—turn back if conditions deteriorate. Best season is July through September when snow clears the high country. No services or water along the route; start with full tanks in Cle Elum. The payoff is some of Washington’s most spectacular high country scenery and access to world-class hiking in the Stuart Range wilderness.

Frequently asked questions
Can a stock Tacoma or 4Runner handle Teanaway Ridge Road, or do I need a lifted rig?
Stock high-clearance 4WD with low range can make it, but you'll want at least 8-9 inches of clearance for the rocky shelf sections. A lift helps, but skid plates and sturdy all-terrain tires matter more here than lift height.
When does Teanaway Ridge Road actually open each year, and what closes it?
Typically opens mid-to-late July once snowpack clears the upper ridge, and closes by late October when early-season snow returns — sometimes earlier after a wet fall. Check with Wenatchee National Forest before you go; the high elevation makes it one of the later-opening trails in the region.
Do I need a permit or pass to run Teanaway Ridge Road?
A Northwest Forest Pass is required for trailhead parking on Wenatchee National Forest land — $5 daily or $30 annually. No additional permit is needed to drive the trail itself, but dispersed camping rules apply on National Forest land.
What's the hardest section of the trail and what makes it gnarly?
The exposed knife-edge shelf sections are where this trail earns its rating — narrow rock surface, significant off-camber angles, and drop-offs with no guardrails. One wrong line on loose rock near the ridgeline puts your downhill rocker panel over empty air, so momentum management and a spotter are smart calls.
There's no cell service out there — how far is the nearest gas from the trailhead, and should I plan a fuel stop?
Cle Elum is your last reliable fuel stop, roughly 20-25 miles from the trailhead — fill up there before you head in. Budget extra fuel for low-range crawling; 18 miles of technical ridge road burns significantly more than highway miles.
