Kaokoveld Highlands Circuit
Desert elephant paths through Africa's last frontier
The Kaokoveld Highlands Circuit cuts through some of the most isolated terrain in southern Africa, where desert-adapted elephants have worn paths between seasonal springs for thousands of years. This 280-kilometer loop connects the Kunene River border with Angola to the interior highlands via the Otjihende Mountains, passing Himba settlements that still follow traditional cattle-herding routes. The technical crux hits at Otjitanda Pass, where loose scree and 18-percent grades test both driver skill and vehicle cooling systems in 40-degree heat.
This is serious Extreme-rated terrain requiring expedition-grade 4WD with dual spare tires, extended fuel range, and water for five days minimum. Rocky sections demand aggressive tread patterns and underbody armor, while deep sand pockets catch the unprepared. Best tackled May through September when water sources are most reliable. No permits required, but respect Himba communities and camping protocols. The reward is raw Africa—ancient baobabs, desert elephant encounters, and star fields unmarked by light pollution for 200 kilometers in any direction.
