Herero and Himba Cultural Circuit

Threading through dusty cattle posts and traditional Himba villages between Opuwo and the Kunene River, this circuit follows ancient migration routes still used by semi-nomadic herders. The track passes through Epupa Falls, where the Kunene River drops 60 meters through a series of cascades, before pushing northwest to remote settlements like Okongwati and Orupembe. Red ochre dust from traditional Himba body paint seems to coat everything here, including your windshield after meeting villagers who’ve maintained their customs for centuries.

Moderate difficulty with sandy washes and rocky sections requiring high-clearance 4WD, though the real challenge is cultural sensitivity and self-sufficiency. Dry season (May to October) offers better access, but expect deep sand and river crossings during any season. Carry extra fuel (400+ km range), water for at least 3 days, and gifts for village elders if visiting settlements. Cell service disappears after Opuwo.
