Kaokoveld Circuit
Namibia's wildest frontier through Himba territory
The Kaokoveld Circuit penetrates Namibia’s most isolated corner, where the Kunene River forms the Angola border and Himba pastoralists still live traditionally. Starting from Opuwo, the route heads west to Epupa Falls where the Kunene River thunders through a series of cascades and palm-lined pools. From there, it’s a challenging drive north through the Marienfluss and Hartmann valleys, past ancient baobab trees and Himba settlements where semi-nomadic families tend cattle and goats in landscapes that haven’t changed for centuries.
This is Expert territory requiring serious 4WD preparation, recovery gear, and preferably traveling in convoy. Rocky terrain, deep sand, and river crossings demand high-clearance vehicles with aggressive tread. The route is best tackled May through September when river levels are manageable and temperatures bearable. Carry extra fuel (300+ km range), water, and supplies as there are no services between Opuwo and Epupa Falls. The reward is experiencing one of Africa’s last truly wild frontiers, where elephants still migrate along ancient paths and traditional cultures survive in stunning mountain desert landscapes.
