Tobacco Root Mountains Backcountry Loop

Expert alpine mining loop in forgotten peaks

Expert

The Tobacco Root Mountains hide some of Montana’s most challenging backcountry between the Madison and Jefferson valleys. This rugged loop connects a network of old mining roads that climb from 5,000 to over 9,000 feet, linking ghost camps like Mammoth and Rochester through terrain that’ll test every inch of your rig’s capability. The route follows Forest Roads 9494 and 9492 through steep switchbacks, loose shale climbs, and creek crossings that can turn into Class III rapids during snowmelt. At Branham Lakes, you’re rewarded with alpine views that stretch across three mountain ranges and mining ruins that tell stories of boom-and-bust cycles dating to the 1860s.

This is expert-level wheeling that demands proper 4WD with low range, skid plates, and tow points. Summer-only access due to heavy snow from October through June, and even July can surprise you with late-season storms. Carry recovery gear, extra fuel, and plan for mechanical issues—cell service is nonexistent, and the nearest help is hours away. Dispersed camping is excellent throughout the loop, with established fire rings at several old mining sites. What you earn is some of Montana’s most remote alpine country, where you might not see another soul for days and every vista looks like it belongs on a postcard.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Jeep Wrangler handle the Tobacco Root Mountains loop?

No, this trail requires modified 4WD with low range, aggressive tires, and skid plates. Stock vehicles will get damaged on the technical rock sections and steep grades.

Is the trail accessible in early June or late October?

No, snow typically blocks the high passes until mid-July and returns by early October. July through September is the only reliable window for safe passage.

Do I need any permits to run this trail?

No permits required for the trail itself, but you're in Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest so standard forest rules apply for camping and fires.

What's the gnarliest section I should prepare for?

The climb to Branham Lakes at 9,400 feet has loose rock, off-camber ledges, and potential for vehicle damage. Many turn back here rather than risk the descent.

How many water crossings should I expect and are any deep?

Multiple creek crossings throughout, mostly shallow but can rise quickly with snowmelt or storms. None are typically deeper than bumper height in normal conditions.
