Cache River Wetlands Historic Trace
Ancient cypress swamps in the Prairie State
The Cache River Wetlands Historic Trace follows raised logging roads and trading routes from the 1800s through Illinois’ last remaining cypress swamp, where thousand-year-old bald cypress trees rise from black water channels that once carried steamboats inland from the Ohio River. The route passes the famous 1,000-year-old Champion Bald Cypress, crosses Heron Pond on a historic timber causeway, and threads between towering tupelo trees in what locals call ‘Illinois’ Everglades.’
Easy to moderate difficulty suitable for any high-clearance vehicle, though spring floods can make sections impassable for weeks. The raised roadways provide stable footing year-round, but wet seasons bring mosquitoes that’ll test your patience. No permits required for the main route, with dispersed camping allowed on state land. Base from Vienna or Karnak for supplies. This is Illinois’ most unique ecosystem – you’ll swear you’re in Louisiana until you remember you’re three hours south of Springfield.
