Giant City State Park Sandstone Canyon Technical Route

Expert-level sandstone crawling through towering rock formations.

Expert

Giant City’s Sandstone Canyon Technical Route follows old logging roads from the 1920s through massive Pennsylvanian sandstone formations that tower 80 feet above narrow slot canyons. The route threads between house-sized boulders and massive stone walls that early settlers compared to city streets, hence the park’s name. The technical crux comes at Devil’s Standtable, where drivers must navigate a steep sandstone ledge with barely 6 inches of clearance on each side, followed by a sharp descent through Fat Man’s Squeeze, a narrow gap between two towering rock walls.

This is expert-level terrain requiring serious rock crawling skills, underbody protection, and spotters for the tightest sections. Articulation and precise wheel placement are critical—scraped paint and bent parts are common. Best tackled in dry conditions from late spring through early fall, as wet sandstone becomes dangerously slick. No camping within the technical sections, but the park offers developed sites nearby. This route tests both driver skill and vehicle capability like few others in Illinois, offering some of the Midwest’s most challenging technical rock crawling.
