Taylor Fork to Hilgard Basin
Madison Range high country to historic lodge ruins
The Taylor Fork Road climbs from the Madison Valley into some of Montana’s most pristine high country, ending at the ruins of Hilgard Lodge where dudes once fished crystal streams beneath 10,000-foot peaks. This 18-mile route follows Taylor Creek through dense timber and open parks, with the ruins of the historic lodge sitting at mile 16 — stone foundations and rusted bed frames marking where wealthy guests once stayed to fish the Madison headwaters.
This is a moderate route requiring high-clearance 4WD for several creek crossings and rocky sections above 8,000 feet. The road can be impassable until July due to snowpack, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. No permits required, but dispersed camping is limited near the lodge ruins. Bring extra fuel and water — the nearest services are 40 miles back in Ennis. You’ll earn solitude few find and some of the best cutthroat fishing in the Northern Rockies.
