Rimrock Road — Breaks of the Missouri Backcountry via Blaine County
Lewis and Clark's river, from the top down.
The Missouri Breaks in north-central Montana are the kind of country that broke the cattle industry in 1886 and still humbles modern drivers who underestimate the gumbo clay. The BLM backcountry roads along the rimrock above the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument — particularly the Fred Robinson Bridge area east toward Cow Island and the James Kipp Recreation Area corridor — run across a landscape of eroded sandstone pinnacles, sagebrush flats, and sudden coulees that drop hundreds of feet to the river below. The road surface is two-track bentonite clay that becomes a greasy skating rink within minutes of any moisture, impassable even to 4WD vehicles. In dry conditions it’s a high-clearance dirt road with washboards and crumbling edges above steep drop-offs.
Timing is everything here — a single thunderstorm can pin you in place for 24 hours while the clay dries. The best window is late June through early July and again in September. Water is scarce on top; the Missouri runs below but access points are limited and the banks are steep. Stock up in Malta or Lewistown before heading in. No maintained facilities exist along the rimrock routes outside of James Kipp. The reward is unmatched: a landscape unchanged since the Corps of Discovery floated through in 1805, elk herds, bighorn sheep on the bluffs, and zero cell service for the duration.

Frequently asked questions
Can a stock Tacoma or 4Runner handle Rimrock Road, or do I need a lifted rig?
A stock high-clearance truck like a Tacoma or 4Runner can manage it in dry conditions, but 4WD is strongly recommended — some coulee crossings and eroded sections will punish a 2WD vehicle. Lifted rigs have more margin for error when the clay gets rutted.
When does Rimrock Road become impassable, and is it driveable in spring?
Avoid it spring through early June — the gumbo clay in the breaks turns into axle-sucking slop after rain or snowmelt and will stop almost any rig cold. Late June through July and September are the reliable windows; late August can work but thunderstorms can shut you down fast.
Do I need a permit to run this route or camp along it?
No permit required for vehicle travel or dispersed camping on BLM land within the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. Standard Leave No Trace rules apply — no campfires during fire restrictions, which are common mid-summer, so check with BLM Lewistown before you go.
What's the hardest section of the route and what makes it technical?
The coulee descents cutting toward the Missouri breaks are where it gets serious — loose shale, steep grades, and tight shelf road sections with limited room to recover if you slide. Wet conditions multiply the difficulty significantly; what's a moderate shelf road dry becomes genuinely dangerous when the clay is saturated.
Is there any water or fuel along the 52-mile route, or do I need to plan for the full stretch self-supported?
Plan to be fully self-supported — there are no services, no reliable water sources you'd want to drink without treatment, and no fuel between Malta and wherever you exit toward Winifred or Lewistown. Tank up in Malta, carry extra fuel if your range is under 200 miles combined, and bring all your water.
