Tsilhqot’in Plateau Heritage Road
Ancient routes through wild horse country
The Tsilhqot’in Plateau Heritage Road follows ancient trade routes across rolling grasslands where wild horses still roam and traditional pit houses dot the landscape. This 160-kilometer loop from Williams Lake connects historic ranches, traditional fishing stations along the Chilko River, and sacred sites maintained by the Tsilhqot’in Nation. The route passes Nemiah Valley, home to one of BC’s last wild horse herds, and skirts Ts’yl-os Provincial Park where Tsilhqot’in warriors made their final stand.
Easy to moderate difficulty suitable for stock high-clearance vehicles, though spring snowmelt can create boggy sections in low areas. Best traveled May through October when weather opens up the plateau. Respect cultural protocols — many sites are sacred to the Tsilhqot’in people. Fuel up in Williams Lake and carry water, as services are limited. What you experience is living First Nations culture in country that remains largely unchanged from pre-contact times. Have a dirty day.
