Chemin de la Rivière Toulnustouc — Manicouagan Reservoir Backcountry Access

Drive into a meteorite crater. No big deal.

Moderate

The Manicouagan reservoir — the eye of Quebec, visible from space — sits inside a 100-kilometre-diameter meteorite impact crater, and the Toulnustouc River drains into its eastern arm. Hydro-Québec punched access roads into this country to build and service the Toulnustouc generating station, and those roads are now some of the most spectacular — and least-travelled — overland routes on the Côte-Nord. The drive begins north of Baie-Comeau off Route 389 and heads inland through mixed boreal forest, rising gradually onto the Canadian Shield plateau before descending to the reservoir’s eastern shore. The Toulnustouc River crossing near the dam site is bridged, but several smaller tributaries are seasonal ford points. Watch for active logging truck traffic — they own these roads and they do not slow down.

Route 389 north of Manic-5 is already a serious road, and the Toulnustouc spur adds another layer of remoteness on top of that. Stock 4WD with decent clearance can manage dry-season runs, but a skid plate and off-road tires are strongly recommended given the sharp shale rock scattered across the track surface. Hydro-Québec controls access to the dam facility itself — stay on the public access portions. Best season is mid-July through early October before the snow flies; the road can be inaccessible in spring due to deep mud and logging restrictions. Fuel in Baie-Comeau before departing — there is nothing north of Manic-5. The payoff is staggering: crater-rim views, turquoise reservoir water, and a geological story 214 million years old sitting right outside your windshield.
