Chemin de la Réserve faunique de Port-Cartier–Sept-Îles — Côte-Nord Highland Interior Circuit

Precambrian shield deep cuts on the Côte-Nord.

Moderate

The Réserve faunique de Port-Cartier–Sept-Îles covers nearly 6,400 square kilometres of granite ridges, lake chains, and black spruce bogs between Highway 138 and the Labrador border hills. The main access road off Route 138 near Port-Cartier is gravel all the way in, but the interior spurs degrade fast — loose rock ledge, exposed root crossings, and seasonal water bars that catch low-slung vehicles by surprise. The Rivière aux Rochers crossing at roughly kilometre 55 is the gnarliest choke point: a wide, rocky ford that reads about two feet in August but surges unpredictably after coastal rain systems blow in off the Gulf. Woodland caribou are a genuine presence here — you’ll see tracks on every sandy section if not the animals themselves.

Moderate overall, but specific spur roads push into Difficult territory. High-clearance 4WD minimum; a second vehicle or solid recovery gear is smart given the distance from help. The reserve requires a SÉPAQ access permit — purchase at the entry station or online through sépaq.com. Fuel at Port-Cartier or Sept-Îles before entry. Cell service is spotty on the first 20 km and nonexistent beyond. Best season is late June through early October; the reserve is closed to vehicle traffic during spring thaw. Fishing is exceptional if you carry a Quebec licence. Plan for at least two nights to make the distance worthwhile — designated campsites exist throughout the reserve interior.
