Chemin Matamec — Sept-Îles to Lac Matamec Wilderness Circuit

Granite highlands and wild rivers behind Sept-Îles.

Difficult

Most visitors to Sept-Îles see the port and the highway, but push west and north on the forestry access roads tracking the Matamec River and you hit a different world fast. The Chemin Matamec and its associated logging spurs climb from sea-level spruce coast into granite uplands dotted with beaver ponds and clear-water lakes. The Matamec Ecological Reserve — one of Quebec’s quietest — sits partway up the drainage, and the roads beyond it get progressively rougher as you push toward the headwater country. River crossings vary significantly by season: spring melt turns the lower fords into serious obstacles. By July the crossings are manageable with a capable rig but never trivial — rocks are slick and current is present.

This is a high-clearance 4WD route. Lockers or aggressive all-terrain tires make a real difference on the wet rock sections near the upper drainage. Cell service is gone within 20 km of Sept-Îles. Fuel up in town — there’s nothing inland. Best season is July to mid-September. Check logging truck traffic schedules before entering; active forestry operations share these roads and the trucks don’t slow down for you. Camping along the Matamec is exceptional — granite ledges above clear river pools, zero people, and loon calls all night. It’s the Côte-Nord’s best-kept overland secret.
