Route des Monts Chic-Chocs — Réserve faunique des Chic-Chocs Interior Road
Alpine caribou country at the edge of the Gaspésie.
The Chic-Chocs are the most dramatic mountains east of the Rockies and the interior access road through the Réserve faunique des Chic-Chocs is how you get deep into them by truck. Starting off Route 299 near Saint-Anne-des-Monts, the road climbs steadily through Balsam fir stands before breaking into subalpine terrain near Mont Logan — at 1,151 m the highest peak in Quebec outside of Labrador. The route passes through critical woodland caribou habitat managed strictly by SÉPAQ, and sections are gated and access is controlled by permit. Washboarding, deep ruts after rain, and exposed ridge-line traverses with no guardrails are all part of the deal.
Minimum vehicle is a stock 4WD with good clearance — the road isn’t brutally technical, but it’s unforgiving when wet and the remoteness adds serious consequence to any breakdown. Cell service is nonexistent past the first few kilometres. Fuel up in Sainte-Anne-des-Monts. The SÉPAQ permit includes access to designated campsites near Lac du Diable — worth every dollar for the alpine sunrise views. Best window is late July to mid-September; snow can close upper sections before and after that window without warning. Caribou sightings on the upper plateau are genuinely possible.
