Spoon River Timber Access Historic Logging Circuit
Century-old logging roads through Spoon River timber
This backcountry network follows the original logging roads cut by the Spoon River Timber Company in the 1890s, when massive oak and walnut groves fed sawmills from Lewistown to Havana. The route traces high ground through Dickson Mounds bottomland, crossing seasonal creeks and navigating around beaver ponds that have reclaimed old log skidding areas. The notorious Devils Hollow ford requires careful timing – it’s been washing out trucks since Model T days when it served as the main timber haul crossing.
Moderate difficulty with seasonal water hazards makes this a spring and early summer adventure for experienced drivers with recovery gear. High-clearance 4WD essential, plus waders for scouting crossings. No permits required on state forest roads, but respect hunting season closures. Primitive camping allowed along designated forest roads with fire restrictions. This is Illinois timber country as the loggers knew it – muddy, wild, and unforgiving to those who don’t read the water right.
