Illinois River Bluffs Sand Prairie Traverse

Desert plants and sand dunes in the Midwest

Easy

The Illinois River carved this valley during glacial times, leaving behind rare sand prairie that supports prickly pear cactus and other desert plants 1,000 miles east of where they belong. This route crosses Mason and Cass counties through the largest intact sand prairie remaining in the Midwest, following section roads and hunting club two-tracks across deep sand that’ll test your momentum and tire pressure management. Key waypoint is Matanzas Prairie, where the Nature Conservancy protects 1,600 acres of original sand prairie complete with compass plants that grow 12 feet tall.

Easy to moderate difficulty depends entirely on conditions—spring rain turns sand to quicksand, while summer drought creates deep powder that’ll beach anything without momentum. Air down to 15 PSI and keep moving through the soft sections. Open year-round but avoid during waterfowl season (October-January) when most areas close to hunting. No permits required for the public sections, but respect private land boundaries that shift seasonally. Dispersed camping available on state land parcels. This is Illinois ecology at its strangest—sand dunes, cactus, and bottomland hardwoods all within a few miles of each other.
