Grand Lake Stream Timber Circuit

Gravel loop through Maine's fishing paradise

Easy

The Grand Lake Stream Timber Circuit loops through 32 miles of active logging roads in the heart of Washington County’s legendary fishing country, connecting a chain of lakes that have drawn anglers since the 1800s. This well-maintained gravel route starts in the village of Grand Lake Stream—home to the famous registered Maine guides—and winds north through working timber lands owned by Irving Woodlands. The circuit passes West Grand Lake’s pristine shoreline at Mile 8, where you can still see the stone foundations of the old sporting camps that once hosted wealthy sportsmen from Boston and New York.

This is easy-moderate territory perfect for stock high-clearance vehicles, though active logging means sharing the road with loaded timber trucks that have the right of way. Spring brings muddy conditions, so summer through fall offers the best travel. No permits required on these private logging roads, but respect the working forest and pack out everything. The payoff is access to some of Maine’s finest landlocked salmon and smallmouth bass fishing, plus camping spots along crystal-clear lakes where the only sounds are loons calling and the splash of rising fish.
