Onion Valley to Horseshoe Meadows — Eastern Sierra High Country Traverse

Sierra fault scarp, Alabama Hills, no crowds.

Moderate

The eastern escarpment of the Sierra Nevada is one of the most dramatic fault scarps on the continent, and the dirt roads threading its base and benches put you right in it. This route runs south from the Onion Valley Road junction near Independence, drops into the Owens Valley floor, picks up the network of BLM two-tracks through the Alabama Hills, and climbs back out toward Horseshoe Meadows Road above Lone Pine — a rolling, corrugated run through sage flats, granite boulders, and the kind of silence that makes your ears ring. The Alabama Hills section is unmistakable: those rounded orange-granite domes have backed every western ever shot in California, and at dawn they glow like a furnace.

This is a high-clearance route, not a technical crawl — a capable 4WD with decent ground clearance handles it in dry conditions, though sand and washboard will punish low-profile tires. Summer is doable but brutally hot below 5,000 feet; April through June and September through October are the sweet spots. No permit required for the BLM sections. Fuel in Independence or Lone Pine — nothing in between. Water is scarce; bring all you need. Dispersed camping is legal on BLM land throughout the Alabama Hills.
