Onion Valley Road climbs 6,200 feet in roughly 13 miles off US-395 at Independence, hauling you from Owens Valley floor scrub into a world of polished granite bowls and glassy alpine lakes sitting at the base of the Sierra Crest. The paved road gives way to rougher conditions near the top, and the switchbacks above 10,000 feet are tight enough to keep bigger rigs honest. Kearsarge Pass trailhead at the top is a legitimate high-altitude destination on its own — the views back down to the Owens Valley and across to Inyo Mountains are stop-the-truck stunning. The road is typically gated in winter and runs into heavy snowmelt traffic in early summer.
Most of the road is passable by a stock 4×4 or even a capable AWD rig, but length and tire clearance matter on the upper switchbacks. Permits are required for overnight backpacking, but the drive-up is free and the dispersed camping near lower trailheads is first-come. Fuel in Independence or Lone Pine — there’s nothing at the top. Best window is July through October before first snow closes the upper gate. What you get is the Eastern Sierra granite corridor at its most dramatic, with Owens Valley laid out 6,000 feet below you. Yes — a stock 4WD pickup or SUV with decent clearance handles it fine. The road is steep and rocky in sections but nothing that requires a lift; just engage 4WD on the upper switchbacks and watch your undercarriage on the sharper embedded rocks.
When does the road actually open in spring and when does it close in fall?
