Machias River Tote Road

The Machias River Tote Road cuts through some of Maine’s most isolated timber country, following old logging roads that have served the paper companies for over a century. This remote route parallels and crosses the Machias River multiple times as it winds through dense spruce-fir forests and past abandoned logging camps. The trail follows the river’s natural meanders, offering glimpses of pristine wilderness that few ever see, with the constant sound of rushing water as your companion.

This is a moderate trail requiring high-clearance 4WD for the rocky stream crossings and muddy sections that appear after spring runoff or heavy rains. Best tackled from late summer through early fall when water levels are lower and the notorious Maine mud has had time to dry. Bring recovery gear, extra fuel, and plenty of water—cell service is nonexistent and the nearest help is hours away. What you get is authentic Maine wilderness and some of the best brook trout fishing in the Northeast.
