Waucoba-Saline Valley Road — Owens Valley to Saline Valley via Inyo Mountains Crest

Death Valley's back door — hot springs and hard miles.

Difficult

Most people enter Saline Valley through the north end off Big Pine, but the Waucoba Road from Owens Valley punches straight over the Inyo Mountains crest near 7,000 feet before plunging you into one of the hottest, most remote valleys in North America. The route starts on Highway 168 east of Big Pine, climbs through pinyon juniper and Joshua tree country to the summit ridge with sweeping views of both Owens Valley and the Saline Basin, then descends a gnarly, loose-rock grade to the valley floor. From there you’re in the Saline Valley proper — a seasonally inhabited patch of desert famous for its warm springs, its palms, and its deeply off-grid vibe. The springs at Saline Valley Warm Springs are the reward — 105°F water in the open desert, surrounded by dunes and nothing else for 50 miles in any direction.

This is a legitimate difficult route. The Inyo descent is rocky and steep with no room to pass; a lifted truck with lockers is the right tool. Washouts can make sections impassable after storms — call the Death Valley NPS line before you roll. No fuel or services exist in Saline Valley; fuel in Big Pine and carry extra. Water at the springs is not potable — pack your own. Best season is October through April. The BLM-administered Saline Valley Road requires no permit; the area within Death Valley National Park boundary does not either. Remote camping is allowed throughout. Plan for two days minimum — rushing this one is a mistake.
