Forestry Trunk Road

Alberta's thousand-mile forestry spine

Difficult

Before anyone called it overlanding, Alberta loggers and oilfield workers were running the Trunk Road — a massive forestry access route that parallels the Rockies for nearly a thousand miles. Starting at the Crowsnest Pass and ending near Grande Prairie, this isn’t one road but a network of connected forestry routes that slice through some of Canada’s most remote industrial wilderness. The southern sections around the Oldman River are technical and rocky, while the northern stretches become endless gravel straightaways through boreal forest. Bighorn Dam and the Ram River crossing are notorious bottlenecks where skill matters more than horsepower.

This is serious expedition territory — think weeks, not weekends. You’ll need a capable 4WD with underbody protection, full recovery kit, and enough fuel for 300-kilometer stretches without services. Industrial traffic means wide loads and radio protocols. Summer gives you the best conditions, but even then expect washouts, bridge closures, and sections that’ll test your suspension. The reward is accessing country most Canadians never see, from alpine meadows to endless spruce bogs, with world-class fishing and hunting opportunities throughout. Bring maps, satellite communication, and respect for working forestry operations.
