Cold Water Springs State Forest Ridge Road

CCC-era ridge roads through challenging timber country

Difficult

Cold Water Springs hides Iowa’s most challenging forest road network, built by CCC crews in the 1930s to access timber stands along the steep ridges above the Iowa River tributaries. The main ridge road climbs through mature oak-hickory forest, passing the stone foundations of Camp Wapello before dropping into Cold Water Creek valley. Navigation gets tricky where old logging spurs branch off unmarked—GPS is essential when the canopy blocks satellite signals completely.

This route demands patience and a vehicle with low-range gearing for the steeper creek descents. Wet weather turns the clay-based trails into greased skating rinks that’ll have you sliding sideways down hillsides. Late fall through early spring offers the best conditions when leaves are down and visibility improves. No services for 20+ miles, so pack water and recovery gear. The payoff is complete solitude and some of the best hardwood forest scenery in eastern Iowa.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Jeep Wrangler handle Cold Water Springs Ridge Road?

Yes, but you'll need 4WD with low range and decent ground clearance. The creek crossings and steep rutted sections will test your undercarriage, so skid plates are recommended.

Why is the trail only recommended November through March?

The dirt roads turn into impassable mud during Iowa's wet seasons, and summer brings heavy vegetation growth that blocks the already narrow passages. Winter months provide the most reliable conditions.

Do I need permits to drive Cold Water Springs Ridge Road?

No permits required, but you must stay on designated forest roads only. The Iowa DNR allows day use and dispersed camping in the state forest.

What's the most challenging part of this trail?

The spring-fed creek crossings can vary dramatically with seasonal water levels, and some of the ridge descents have deep ruts that'll high-center vehicles without proper clearance. Scout water depths on foot first.

Can I camp along the trail and is there cell service?

Dispersed camping is allowed throughout the state forest, but there's zero cell service once you're in the timber. Plan accordingly and let someone know your route before heading out.
