Spruce Lake Protected Area Circuit

Caribou country alpine wilderness circuit

Difficult

Deep in the Cariboo Mountains, this 85-kilometer loop connects a maze of decommissioned logging roads through Spruce Lake Protected Area. The route climbs from valley bottom Douglas fir into alpine meadows where caribou still roam, crossing three major creek systems and skirting a dozen unnamed lakes. The highlight is Spruce Lake itself — a mirror-perfect alpine gem surrounded by peaks that scrape 2,400 meters.

Difficult terrain with steep, loose climbs and technical rock gardens that’ll test your line choice. Locked differentials recommended, especially for the descent into Slim Creek valley. June to September only — snow lingers well into summer at elevation. No services for 200 kilometers, so carry fuel, water, and recovery gear. This is legitimate wilderness where cell service doesn’t exist and help won’t come looking. The payoff is untouched backcountry camping and wildlife viewing that feels like stepping back 100 years.
