Slim Creek FSR to Groundhog Lake

Deep Hart Ranges solitude above McBride.

Difficult

Northeast of McBride in the Robson Valley, the Slim Creek Forest Service Road climbs out of the Fraser River bottomland and punches deep into the Hart Ranges. The route follows Slim Creek FSR before branching toward Groundhog Lake, gaining serious elevation through spruce-fir forest that gives way to open subalpine meadows. The road surface transitions from maintained gravel to rutted two-track as you push higher — expect mud wallows after any rainfall, aggressive off-camber sections near creek drainages, and at least two unbridged ford crossings of Slim Creek tributaries that require a proper read before committing. Moose are nearly guaranteed; the mountains behind the lake are stunning.

This is solidly a high-clearance 4WD route in dry conditions, but after rain it earns a difficult rating fast. A locker — front or rear — is strongly recommended, as is a recovery kit and a partner vehicle. Cell service disappears within the first few kilometres of the FSR. The McBride Robson Valley Forest District manages the road; conditions can be checked locally at the district office. Best season is mid-July through September once spring thaw drains out. Fuel in McBride before you leave — there’s nothing out here. Dispersed camping is permitted along the FSR corridor; the lake itself rewards with views into the Hart Ranges that few BC travellers ever see.
