Chimney Peak to Fish Creek Road — Southern Sierra Nevada Desert Transition Zone

Ancient sea floor, badlands, and deep desert sand.

Moderate

Fish Creek Wash in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is where the earth looks like it lost a fight with itself. The route follows the wash from Split Mountain Road south into the Fish Creek Mountains, threading between towering badland formations, past the wind caves carved into sandstone above the canyon floor, through the Elephant Trees Discovery Area, and eventually linking toward Harper Flat. Split Mountain itself is the marquee obstacle — a narrow gorge with boulder-strewn sandy floor that requires constant line selection. The geology here is world-class: you’re driving through ancient sea floor that tilted vertical, and the layered walls make that impossible to ignore.

Sand is the main enemy — aired-down tires are mandatory, and recovery gear including a shovel and traction boards should be standard kit. Stock 4WD trucks handle this with proper tire pressure management; low range and lockers help in the deeper wash sections. No permit required for day use, but camping within the park requires a reservation through Reserve California. Best season is November through March — summer temperatures in this canyon will kill you without exaggeration. Fuel in Ocotillo Wells before you drop in. Water: carry everything you need, bring more than you think.
