Ottawa National Forest Forest Road 8760 Bond Falls Technical Route
Granite-crushing route to spectacular waterfalls
Forest Road 8760 punches through some of the Ottawa’s gnarliest terrain en route to Bond Falls’ thundering cascade. This technical route follows old CCC roads blasted through granite outcrops in the 1930s, with steep descents that’ll test your low-range gearing. The road crosses the Middle Branch Ontonagon River twice, where granite boulders create natural tire traps and the current runs strong during snowmelt.
Expert drivers only — stock rigs will get chewed up on the granite shelves and off-camber descents. Bring recovery gear, a spotter, and extra skid plates. Spring runoff makes river crossings dangerous; late summer through fall offers the safest passage. The payoff justifies the beating: Bond Falls drops 50 feet through a granite gorge few people reach overland. Dispersed camping is limited but legal along the river. Fill up in Paulding — there’s nothing closer than 40 miles.
